of - of >> on today's show. this not a recording and we're sad. in mailbox we show you larry sanders. we'll discuss the on court argument for rick carlisle. starters starts now.
good day sweet world whether your catching us on nba t.v. i'm jay skeets and tas mulli's to my rights trey kir bip and finally international man of mystery. lee, lee. get to the male box and we'll talk about the rick carlisle on core beef but first we have
depressing news to address. derek rose set to under go serious knee surgery for the third time in three years. bulls announceed the star point guard is undergoing surgery to repair the meniscus the same one the last injury. had damage there done to the
left of course as well. no timetable as of right now set for the return until he goes under the surgery and don't know what particular type he'll have. but this depressing. lot of doubt about derek rose so you'll hear a lot of people say he's done.
first of all do not listen to those people and delete their numbers from your phone. you don't want to talk to people like that. we don't know if he's done but he'll not have the career we once all hoped and that's why we saw the outpouring of messages
from colleagues all the players so sorry to see derek rose and what he's gone through to get back and he's not going to get to the same level in 2011 for certain. will we see him again? i hope so and i think so the way he likes to and just has fought
through injury before. >> he hasn't been dominant this season. trey you're a bulls fan and can a test to that but has struggled especially post all-star break. couldn't shoot the basketball at all but we thought he was on his way to becoming the old derek
rose. there were flashes of brilliance and this is unbelievable set-back at probably the worse possible timing when you consider after the trade deadline and if this happen as week or two prior maybe the bulls can make a move and
salvation vamg the season. unfortunate. saddest and the first one i was mad it happened and the second one it was like i can't believe it would happen and this one is like nothing specific even happened nobody knows when he got hurt.
19 straight games and by far the longest since the first injury just a super bummer. always been a basketball first and only guy we remember not dancing at the all-star game because it wasn't the proper time so having it taken away. such a bummer.
that explosiveness we'll probably not see again but he's young enough to have a successful career. and be back this year. but he's handled the injuries wel it's impossible not to think of guys like penny hardaway and had
issues and grant hill and guys at the beginning of their career was exslow save and hall-of-fame locks. roi you could throw in the mix and their careers cut short. penny and grant played a long time but were never that again sort of superstar hall-of-fame
star player on a team. like we said rose has not been himself defense is not good and he's probably never going to be the unquestioned go to guys for the bull and that is a super sad thing. at a time he's surrounded by the best talent ever with pau gasol
and jimmy butler. this was a team that we said yeah they're the ones that will see them coming and i don't think you can sit here today and say the same thing. wouldn't say this team is done this season. who knows how long it takes for
him to come back i'm sure he wants to repair it. they snip that part out and like westbrook. we can come back and be a complimentary piece. you can repair the meniscus or remove it. i see you shulter?
>> it brings back nightmare. chris paul in the mix and bled so and if it was turn. kc johnson reported you do have to remove it ch. but long-term we heard derek rose point to the post playing career. this man deserved to be able to
do that. and he had been doing that. coming back from the other energy injuries. rivalled lebron. even harder to watch with russell westbrook. those guys were the same player and westbrook is better every
single time. >> russell westbrook is a sigh borg. he's not human. we're not going to see unfortunately because three are incredibling clips and i saw a guy post this how derek rose could be the first nba m.v.p. to
never make the hall-of-fame. you look at all the guys not that have won one. might be the first. at least for the chicago bulls they've been very competitive and made the playoffs and obviously the bulls will still make it in the east and i think
it's difficult to see them beat the half cavs and the hawks. >> you start thinking you can get to the first round. nate robinson former bulls player that had great games for the bulls there a couple of years ago. him and mike james another name
from bulls lore but i am sure arencibia brooks will take a ton of shots and they do well when they have a tiny point guard and it always works out okay. maybe noah and you asked if derek rose can well this team fights through anything. well lots more.
hopefully we'll talk about this in the coming days when we learn more about what route for surgery and when his timetable is. we have to take a break and when we come back. let's have fun. open up the starters mailbox.
great questions from you guys one involving larry sanders. come on back you're watching "the starters". >> look there's mail. we got mail. >> back with "the starters" you're great at sending in questions.
starers at nba.com. first one. hey guys i'm curious to hear your thoughts on the new larry sanders video. in it sanders shed light on why he has no intention to return to basketball. and we have actually a short
exert of the clip. here it is >> i disappear for a while and people wonder where i was. i see enter into roger memorial hospital a program for mood disorders. i love basketball but you know for it to consume so much of my
life and time right now that's just not there for me. it's not that worth it. i am at a point where i'm excited about devoting my energy to these positive things and people and making a difference in this unseen world. >> there it is a short clip of
about five plus minutes of the this them. it's an interesting watch and to hear the player himself in this whu he left basketball. it's weird but he seems happy. >> to here from his mouth he seems definitely happier in a place and there's a lot of
ignorant people yelling and screaming at him saying come on. i mean where is your head at and his shed in a better place and he's happier man and you should understand where he's coming from. it's a lot easier to leave after $20 million.
similar to the rickie williams situation and maybe he'll be back. still a super young guy. a lot of especially big guys are geared towards basketball because of their size and it chooses them. they don't get to sometimes
choose basketball and that's, i don't know for sure that's what happens here but you can be sure that's happened overtime big giant guys being told you should play basketball but maybe they don't enjoy it. what people on social media go crazy about is you decided to
walk away and people can't understand why you would leave millions because it was a buy-out because he left millions to walk away from a game. >> i think he loves basketball from the day he got in and decide it was his passion in the first place.
>> but it's different when it's your job. anyone can end up hating their job can get upset and when you do you just want to leave and that's what happens here. >> takes courage to walk away. a lot of guys would fight for it but he feels it's better him and
hopefully we do see him back at some point. >> he's not saying i'm done for good and retired it's a possibility that we do see larry sanders in a year or two. it's an interesting situation. next question. basketball in the nba has
evolved from a league full of mid league maestros who of past nba players do you think would benefit the most from the current style of play in the nba this coming from jason. starters fans. this is a fun question. lee i know you love this.
anyone jump out to you? >> ridiculous to say but larry bird would probably be even better mefr made a hundred threes and the most he attempted was a 3 point three and the way the court is so wide open. now the way three-pointers are emphasized and probably could
have had a longer career and longer shorts these days. plus, haircut technology. >> disagree on the shorts. >> you're right. one of the best passers. >> even more dominant. what about you lee? >> the guy that larry bird said
defended is michael grouper. typical three and d guy but first to adopt back in the 80s off the bench and shoot three-pointers and shot in the last five seasons averaged nearly three a game that doesn't sound like much but back then teams only averaged five or so.
the prototypical guy that can come off the bench and won defensive player of the year and defended best player and went down and knocked down three-pointers and then it wasn't a play designed but more you had to get it in the offensive and he was brilliant
at it. >> key or three term. smart move. flourishing in today's game. the three? >> key or three. since this year is ground breaking in the field of wedgies which use less but fun stat you
think would be fun next season. i would suggest the number of botched inbounds passes since it's topical recently coming from shot land. that ball is wedged. >> right. we track our wedges. we're at 3m.
haven't had one in a couple of days and due for one maybe tonight. i like the idea if we're done about possibly tracking spilled courtside drinks and you can even see us starting to put from every spilled drink like a beer bottle up onset and we add to
it. can we see this is pretty frequent. guys hustling in there. plumlee is the best one. six or seven took out a whole trey so yeah i think we can count those. possibly.
i love that. that is a great idea. >> any other really interesting to see which ones and who had the best hand financial you're able to track who is getting where and where they're trying go and all the cool moves and i think there's just a lot of
different sort of extra stats you can get if you're tracking the number of dribbles and where they are going. quick play to the analytical conference and do and present the wedges. >> fly out there. got to take a break and when we
return back. do the dallas mavericks have arencibia do problem or are people over reacting. we'll get into this next. come on back. >> welcome back to the starters. dallas mavericks had a small altercation in their own team
tuesday night. head coach rick carlisle had it out and want to time-out. time-out. about:20 and rondo sat the rest of the game after upsetting mr. rick carlisle and we'll talk about how this effects the mavs but first let's hear carlisle's
take post-game. >> emotional game and we had a difference of opinion so there was an exchange and then in my mind it was over. >> is that a difference of opinion regarding play calling? >> i'm not going to get into that.
but in my behind once it was over it was over. >> was it that coaches decision made for basketball reasons or disciplinary reason? >> it was made because time coach and that's the decision i made at the time. how many other ways you want me
to answer the same question. >> one you haven't answered it yet. if rondo is your starting point guard tomorrow? >> that's what we brought him here for. >> this is dirk's taken to situation.
he's the only one that hinted at what it was all about. dirk said we won the game but stuff like this is never good. i think rajon has been there and feels he needs more leverage out there but this is not for me to decide that's from tim mcmahon and want to hear your take
because i really don't think it's a big deal. >> don't at all. but rondo wants more play calling and i think this should bring them together more than tear them apart. >> rondo likes to freelance and rick carlisle likes to coach and
thought he would integrate him into the mavericks that was a concern coming so i can see this being a beef down the road and this continuing but also i kind of think they're going to put it behind them because they won't care about it and it'll be another game as soon as
possible. dirk eluded to it and mentioned back in 2011 when carlisle had a dust up with terry and there was frustrations with kid and he said i can it can bring you closer to together. i think rondo realized carlisle is not afraid to break down the
law and i feel rondo is the type of guy that's how you get respect from rondo. a guy that doesn't cower. i'm in charge what he's saying. >> mavericks were good with him on the bench. they haven't been that much better since he arrive showed
has to earn the respect. >> that's what we should be talking about. rondo struggling and turnovers in 25 games or so. hasn't worked out as well. >> i hate the people that think well this isn't working out whatsoever things are working
out well. they have a 62 win percentage. nine and three over the last 12 plus rajon rondo had his face broken. and nasal fracture. listen. carlisle will start tonight against the hawks and i think
they'll put it behind them quickly and rondo is not going to have all the leash in the world for play calling. he gave kid some congratulations back in the day. so there's going to be attention and rajon will get more of a leash but it's extremely
difficult to integrate a guard mid season. >> that's really what they're focus is right now. they need to start racking up wins. >> i have a feeling some people disagree was. some people you are right.
tas went rondo is out there of there they're butting heads we have to unleash the fantasy yuan corp. time for starters fantasy. looking at the basketball implications of the unfortunate rerecognize rose and fantasy guys that candidate pick up the
injury. might want to take a flier on nate roberson and go for mike james. 27% and a guy that could have been obedience earlier and tas has them. averaging ten points a game and three and a half shooting a lot
more minutes and opportunity. go ahead and grab arencibia brooks. >> i like that suggestion. tony snell snell i would avoid. that's going to come down. >> all right guys got to take one more break. pick them playoff results and a
solid play. raptors get it in a loss. look at pick them pay off. tas a perfect four for four and had the mavs in the late game and lose a game and still up one for the month of february. tas 32 and 23. tonight's picks we agree on a
lot of them. huge game we'll take the blazers at home and tas has the spurs on the road trip. the rodeo trip picking up the win and the loser a reminder if you didn't catch yesterday's show will have to do one in march as one of their puppets.
that might be the toughest part. working on the shoulders. lee let's get to the solid play of the night. >> i did find one. we had a bounce pass and chris passing and a swish bomb. ball wasn't fizzing around and that's what i call a very solid
play. >> there it is. very solid show, join us then. >> and remember if your grandma knows how to text you are a lucky son of a gun. i embrace the night people. p
